ROSELLE NJ – Beware of Sharpe objects.

A warning — and, in the case of the Randolph Girls Ice Hockey Team, a lesson — that Summit Girls Varsity Ice Hockey Team opponents need to heed as evidenced by the offensive damage done by the Hilltoppers’ Sharpe duo in the sixth-seeded Maroon and White’s 12-2 NJSIAA State Tournament-opening win over the 11th-seeded Rams at the Warinanco Skating Center.

Senior captain Emily Sharpe had three goals and five assists, and junior Caroline Sharpe notched four goals and two assists to total 14 points between them. In sum, six Hilltoppers had at least two points on the night. Sophomore Leah Rubinshteyn had two goals and two assists as did freshman Elizabeth Puskar. Sophomore Taylor Cornell added a goal and two assists, senior captain Lily Neilan had two assists and junior Maisie Hiltabrand contributed a helper as Summit upped their season mark to 13-6-2. Freshman Lily Spinner and sophomore Maddie Busam split time in goal and combined for 13 saves. The Hilltoppers outshot Randolph 52-15.

Anna Stock and Steph Martin scored for the Rams.

Summit led 5-1 after one and 9-2 after two periods before tacking on three unanswered tallies in the final frame.

The tourney’s degree of difficulty will now get exponentially ratcheted up for the Hilltoppers, as they advance to take on third-seeded Pingry February 27 at the Bridgewater Sports Arena. Face-off is set for 4 p.m.
