ROSELLE, NJ – Three minutes after the Summit High School Boys Varsity Hockey Team senior Luc Radice had tied the game in the third period, Randolph’s Austin Cross’ effort to keep the puck in the Hilltoppers zone from the boards at the blue line found its way through a sea of players and into the net, a goal that stood up to be the game-winner as Randolph handed the Hilltoppers their first loss of the season, 3-2 at the Warinanco Skating Center.

After a scoreless first period, Summit took the lead at the 6:17 mark of the second when sophomore Greg Sptiznagel — assisted by sophomore Gavin Ruschmeier and Radice — scored. Randolph got even on the scoreboard with 3:06 to go in the stanza through Nick Gallo and then took the lead 43 seconds into the third when Kyle Barbera beat Summit freshman goaltender Grant McCormack.

Radice tied the game for the Maroon and White 81 seconds later, set-up by junior Tom Pryymak, before Cross’ fortuitous ‘keep in’ at 9:12. Summit, despite pulling McCormack for an extra attacker late, could not get the goal to force overtime.

Summit outshot Randolph 32-30. McCormack finished with 28 saves between the pipes.

The Hilltoppers, now 4-1 on the season, next take on Scotch Plains-Fanwood December 17 at Warinanco. Game time is set for 6:30 p.m.
