WAYNE, NJ – In their last game versus Montclair Kimberley Academy, the Summit High School Boys Varsity Hockey Team took the elevator of euphoria to the penthouse when they scored two late goals and left the rink with a 5-4 comeback win.

Back on the ice versus Morris Knolls, the Hilltoppers were reminded that the afore-mentioned elevator goes in both directions, as they surrendered two goals, one inside the final two minutes, which turned a potential victory in an eventual 5-5 tie at the Ice Vault Arena.

Junior Jake Puskar had two goals for the Maroon and White and freshman Chris Magovern added a goal and two assists. Sophomore Greg Spitznagel (1G, 1A) and senior Davis Strabley (2A) each had two-point nights. Freshman netminder Grant McCormack made 19 saves as Summit, now 12-4-1, outshot the Golden Eagles 35-24.

Jacob Walsh had two goals and goaltender Andrew Rush had 30 stops to pace the home team.

The team’s played a 1-1 first period before Summit got second-period goals from Magovern, Puskar — his second of the game — and senior Remi Vidal. The Hilltoppers’ output was blunted to a great extent by two Morris Knolls tallies that left Summit with a slim 4-3 lead after 30 minutes of hockey.

Spitznagel made it 5-3 in the third, but the visitor’s late lead didn’t stick.

Next up for Summit is a January 26 road trip to Montclair. Face-off is set for 8 p.m. at Clary Anderson Arena.
