Summit H.S. Boys Hockey Battles Bergen Catholic but Falls, 3-1
HACKENSACK, NJ – Taking on the top-ranked team in the state on the road, the Summit High School Boys Varsity Ice Hockey Team went toe-to-toe with Bergen Catholic before dropping a 3-1 decision at the Ice House in Hackensack. The loss is Summit’s first after opening the season with five straight wins.
Senior captain Tom Pryymak had the lone Hilltopper tally, and senior Nikita Pryymak stopped 25 out of the 28 shots he faced.
The Maroon and White perhaps deserved better than coming out of the first period trailing 1-0. The Bergen Catholic goal bouncing off a Hiltopper defender and past Nikita Pryymak.
Trailing 2-0 late in the second period, Summit turned the puck over while on the power play and the Crusaders’ Nicholas Chiurazzi scored on a breakway shorthanded, a no-no against any team. but a mistake that can be written in ALL CAPS when taking on a powerhouse like Bergen.
To their credit, Summit scored 21 seconds later on the very same power play, but still trailed 3-1 after two periods.
Anchored by goaltender Brendan McCaskey, who had 24 saves, the Crusaders played a tight third to seal the victory.
Next up for Summit is matchup versus Ramsey December 23 as part of the Ice Vault Holiday Tournament in Wayne. The puck drops at 6:45 p.m.
