SUMMIT, NJ – Down 5-4 with less than 90 seconds remaining, Hilltopper junior Tom Pryymak scored with 1:17 remaining to tie the score and then, for good measure, turned around and netted the game-winner 22 seconds later giving the Summit High School Boys Varsity Hockey team a dramatic 6-5 triumph over Montclair Kimberley Academy (MKA) at the Warinanco Skating Center.

Sophomore Greg Spitznagel had a Hat Trick to fuel the Maroon and White’s offense during the see-saw affair and set the stage for Pryymak’s heroics. Freshman goaltender Grant McCormack stopped 14 shots for Summit, which outshot the Cougars 34-19. Junior Spencer Myers, Pryymak and sophomore Justin Ross each had a pair of assists for The ‘Top, now 12-4 on the season.

David Chen paced MKA with a Hat Trick of his own.

The teams played hot potato with the lead in a first period that ended with the Hilltopers ahead 3-2. Spitznagel opened the contest’s scoring at 11:10 and MKA knotted it up less than four minutes later. The game stayed tied at one apiece until things got nutty in the final 63 seconds of the frame, a phase that began with junior Jake Puskar putting Summit back up 2-1, only to see the Cougars level things again 17 seconds later only to then see Spitznagel restore the lead 16 seconds after that.

A less breathless — from a goal-scoring perspective — second period saw MKA get the only marker, and then the Cougars and the Hilltoppers again took turns lighting the lamp in the third. First Chen’s second tally at 7:28 gave MKA their first lead of the game, then Spitnagel’s third of the game 88 seconds later tied the tilt at 4-4. Chen then bagged his third of the game 54 seconds later and it looked like an unhappy conclusion for the home team until Pryymak and his teammates decided to write a different ending to the story.

Next up for Summit is a January 24 trip to the Ice Vault Arena in Wayne to take on Morris Knolls. Face-off is set for 8:30 p.m.
