Though just a freshman, Leah Rubinshteyn has no reservations showing upperclassmen how to put the puck in the net.

The Summit freshman forward took the New Jersey high school hockey season by storm with a state-best 20 goals to go along with 10 assists for the Hilltoppers this past month to earn HockeyClan State Girls Player of the Month Honors for Nov/Dec.

“It’s been a journey and I’ve made a lot of friends here,” Rubinshteyn said. “The seniors are awesome. I couldn’t have done it without everyone else.”

Rubinshteyn recorded five hat tricks, including a three-goal, four-point night performance in her very first game on Nov. 28 — a 12-1 season-opening victory over Westfield. Rubinshteyn went on to record hat tricks against Randolph, Westfield again, Pingry and Princeton and her 30 points this season is 10 more than the next runner-up in the New Jersey state scoring race.

“Leah is competitive, and she expects a lot from herself,” Summit coach Matt Stanbro said. “She’s tenacious and not afraid of hard work. She can control play when necessary, but she’s also a great teammate. She’s quickly becoming a leader on the team, too. Leah is vocal; helping and encouraging new players while on the bench.”

Rubinshteyn’s best game of the season was a four-goal, six point performance in a 7-1 win over Westfield on Dec. 11.
