Summit H.S. Boys Hockey Dumps Cranford 7-2, Sets Up UCT Finals Rematch with Westfield

ROSELLE, NJ – Four goals in a six-minute span that began early in the second period powered the Summit High School Boys Varsity Hockey Team to a 7-2 win over Cranford at the Warinanco Skating Center and into the Union County Tournament (UCT) Final.

In the final January 19, the top-seeded Maroon and White will familiar UCT foe Westfield, which blanked Governor Livingston 5-0 in the other semifinal. To say that the Hilltoppers and the number two-seeded Blue Devils have UCT history is an understatement, with Summit winning convincingly in 2017 before Westfield upset the favored Hilltoppers last year by scoring two goals in the final period to win by a a goal.

Junior Tom Pryymak had two goals and freshman Chris Magovern notched a goal and two assists to lead the The ‘Top, now 11-4 on the season. Freshman netminder Grant McCormack stopped 16 of the 18 pucks directed his way as Summit outshot the Cougars 27-18.

After a scoreless first period, sophomore Greg Spitznagel’s unassisted goal opened the scoring just over a minute into the second stanza. Less than two minutes later, senior Charlie Collins — assisted by senior Luc Radice and junior Spencer Myers — made it 2-0, and then the Hilltopper lead was three when — on the power play — Pryymak scored at 9:32.

Summit’s special teams weren’t done being special, however, and Radice delivered the dagger with the Hilltoppers a man-down, the ‘shortie’ assisted by Magovern and sophomore Gavin Ruschmeier.

Cranford pulled one back through Luke Pachkowski, but sophomore Aidan Cass — from junior Jake Puskar and Magovern — found the back of the net with 3:11 left to make it 5-1.

The Cougars’ Matt Wornelsdorf scored a power play goal to narrow the margin to three with 9:36 remaining in the game, but Magovern and Pryymak — assisted by freshman Jordan Lowry — scored 2:08 apart to apply the final coat of sealant a win which had already been cemented.

The UCT Boys Hockey Final will face-off January 19 at the Warinanco Skating Cener. The puck drops at 6 p.m.
