Freshman Chris Magovern had two goals as the Summit High School Boys Varsity Ice Hockey Team defeated Governor Livingston 3-2 at the Warinanco Skating Center. The win, which improves Summit’s 2019-20 record to 4-0, was hard-earned as the Hilltoppers built a 3-0 lead late in the second period but saw the Highlanders claw back to make it a one-goal game with five minutes remaining in the contest.

Starting his first game in goal for Summit, sophomore Michael Bonomo made 30 saves to earn the ‘W’.

The Maroon and White scored early and late in the opening period to take a 2-0 lead. Magovern — from sophomore Greg Spitznagel and senior captain Charlie Collins — notched the game’s first goal on the power play at 13:07 and junior Tom Pryymak, set-up by Spitznagel, doubled the advantage with 1:17 left in the frame.

Pryymak assisted on Magovern’s second of the game at 3:49 of the second period, which came with the Hilltopper short-handed, and it looked like Summit would sail home from there. The Highlanders, however, had other ideas and Carson Wahlers made it a ‘net zero’ when he scored on the power play that also yielded the Summit short-handed goal.

Wahlers second of the night in the third set up the tight finish. For the game, GL’s Nick Papa stopped 27 of 30 pucks directed at him.

Next up for Summit is a tough tilt against Randolph December 11 at Warinanco. Face-off is set for 6:30 p.m
