MONTCLAIR, NJ – The Summit High School Boys Varsity Hockey Team’s three-game ‘march through the M’s’ — which also featured games against Montclair Kimberley Academy and Morris Knolls — came to a positive conclusion as the Hilltoppers defeated Montclair 2-1 at Clary Anderson Arena.

While it was a ‘MMM Good’ triple of tilts for the boys from the 07901 — they went 2-0-1 over the stretch — the key member of the alphabet in the winning Summit soup versus the Mounties was ‘G’ – as in junior Joe Galgano and freshman goaltender Grant McCormack. The former had a goal and an assist, while the latter stopped 24 of 25 shots in the triumph.

Galgano opened the scoring in the first period, firing home from outside the crease at the right post on assists from classmates Spencer Myers and Tom Pryymak.

Summit doubled its lead in the second period when senior captain Greg Moller scored, assisted by classmate Davis Strabley and Galgano. The tally earned the line of Galgano-Strabley and senior Remi Vidal line another ‘plus’ as the trio had now been on the ice for both Hilltopper goals.

The lead held at a deuce until Montclair’s Brett Janifer halved the advantage inside the stanza’s final two minutes and, even though the late goal gave the Mounties momentum that lasted into the third period, McCormack and his teammates in Maroon and White were abe to push through a scoreless final frame and claim the ‘W’.

For the game, the Hilltoppers outshot Montclair 28-25. Lucas Podvey had 26 saves for the Mounties.

Summit, now 13-4-1 on the season, will next face Westfield January 29 at the Warinanco Skating Center. The puck drops at 6:35 p.m.
